Controversial new statue installed near HOME

Manchester International Festival may now be over but its closing ceremony has left a permanent mark on the city.

A statue of German philosopher Friedrich Engels has been installed near HOME in Tony Wilson Place in honour of his 20 years in the city.

Engels can be found standing tall in what was once of Manchester’s most notorious slums, known as ‘Little Ireland’. The terrible conditions he witnessed as  industrialism took charge inspired his great works.
