The team behind Altrincham’s award-winning food hall have opened the doors to Mackie Mayor in the Northern Quarter.
The former Smithfield meat market on Swan Street is now home to a fine selection of independent food and drink operators.
The historic Grade II building was last open to the public in 1974. The two-storey market has opened with capacity for 500 people and 20,000 meals a week served by ‘passionately regional, fiercely independent’ eateries.
A company statement on Facebook said:
“We’re opening piece by piece, just the ground floor to start with followed by the mezzanine over the course the next week or so. Treat us gently and offer your forgiveness as we struggle into life and work out how to work the newness. It shouldn’t take long.”
“As with Market House we will operate a strict no-bookings policy so that you can turn up on the spur of the moment and pitch-in....which is the way we like it.
“At Market House we can seat 180 people inside and we now feed nearly 10,000 people each week. At Mackie we'll have seating for over 500 people so the quest for a seat might be a little easier, we hope.”
