Cathedral Gardens to become a Xmas wonderland

Cathedral Gardens will be given a festive make-over this Christmas as the historic square is transformed with ice rink and traditional fun fair.

Reprising its role as the family-friendly area of the world-famous Manchester Christmas Markets, Cathedral Gardens has grown year-on-year with bigger and better attractions, becoming a must for youngsters.

The ice rink will take centre stage for any budding Torvill and Deans to find their skates, open a week ahead of the Christmas Markets from Saturday 4 November (the same day as the Christmas Lights Switch-on) through until the New Year, Sunday 7 January.

Also open from Saturday 4 November, a traditional fun fair – complete with Ferris Wheel, carousel, swing chairs (known as a julienne swing) and helter skelter – will complete the magic.

And for those big kids, don’t miss out on artisan bakers George and Shelley’s Pie Shop and their range of warming mulled gins.

Or visit the Well and Spruce with their new espresso martinis, traditional hot meads, and superb hot chocolates.

Cllr Pat Karney, Manchester’s Christmas spokesperson, said: “The markets are a huge draw and we think visitors to Manchester of all ages should be able to enjoy our markets. Cathedral Gardens is a wonderfully calming place where the pace of festivities is a bit slower and perfect for kids of all ages… but that doesn’t mean your pulse won’t race on the ice rink and the fairground!”
